Mountain View Cemetery is one of the rare places where beauty, history, and quiet dignity meet. Designed by the legendary Frederick Law Olmsted, it feels less like a cemetery and more like a living landscape… an intentional work of art that holds the stories of generations.
Every visit reminds me how deeply rooted this place is in our country’s history, and how thoughtfully it was shaped by legends. My own family rests here, and I consider that an honor. There’s a sense of peace on these grounds that’s hard to put
★★★★★This place is always my favorite go to place, for a place full of dead ppl there is still so much life lol. It's beautiful everything there is just so amazing. The grounds are taken good care of, the level of care and respect for the grounds is just lovely. So many different fun animals you come across is so enjoyable. The history you can stumble upon is so fun, I mean I stumbled across the first senator of California and I was like oh wow so cool. I feel so at ease and at peace there, I feel safe and the animals feel that too. The place is so big u keep finding new things so it's always a real treat to come back because it's always different but then u also have the comforts of things being the same as well.

Beautiful cemetery with easily walkable and drivable sections. Worth a visit just to see the older mausoleums and other unique architecture. During the week there wasn't a lot of people walking around. Weekends are likely more busy. A significant section of the place was under construction. A must see in the area.

A beautiful cemetery in the middle of Oakland. It’s easily walkable and drivable, well maintained, and is a great place to spend time taking in the views of the bay and appreciating some beautiful trees. Just be sure to check their opening hours - recently they’ve only been open Wednesday afternoon and Saturday until 4:30pm.
★★★★★I’ve been visiting Mountain View Cemetery for many years, as several of my family members are buried here, including my grandmother. What used to be a beautifully maintained and peaceful resting place has unfortunately declined in condition over the past few years.
The lawns—especially on the hillside and back areas—have become dry, patchy, and neglected. Irrigation seems inconsistent, and in some sections, the grass has died off completely. It’s heartbreaking to see the area looking so unkempt when this should be a place of respect and care for loved ones who rest here.
Families pay for perpetual care expecting that the grounds will be maintained with dignity, but that simply isn’t happening. When I’ve reached out with concerns, I’ve been met with vague assurances or temporary fixes, yet no lasting improvement.
It’s extremely disappointing to see such a historic and once-beautiful cemetery fall into this state of disrepair. I truly hope the management and board of directors will take responsibility, restore proper maintenance, and bring back the level of care this sacred place deserves.
